Needle exchanges are available at selected pharmacies and specialist drug projects.
They provide injecting drug users aged 18 and over withsterile needles, syringes and other equipment.

Visiting a project
As well as needle exchange, drug projects offer:
- specialist advice on safer injecting and drug use
- a wider range and volume of equipment than pharmacies
- assessments to people under 18 who use drugs
Visiting a pharmacy
Pharmacy exchange sites carry a number of pre-prepared harm reduction packs with 10 of each item. See the pack content page
You can expect pharmacy staff to treat you like any other customer. They expect you to:
- Be prepared to wait a short time to be seen, like any other customer, or to return later.
- Return all used injecting equipment in a sharps bin for safe disposal.
- Never throw injecting equipment in the bin, or down the drain or leave it lying around.
What information do we ask for?
We ask you for some basic and anonymous details on the first visit. We expect you to use the same information at every exchange so we can provide you with the right support.
