SLaM AdArt – "we are creative individuals and artists, just like you, who happen to have suffered issues of addictions at some point in our lives."
SLaM AdArt meet weekly in art groups across Lambeth and Southwark within the addictions service. Participant led, artwork is made in all different mediums. Collaborations and exhibitions are organised throughout the year to showcase the artwork made, such as an ongoing collaboration with the Tate Modern to celebrate World Mental Health Day and earlier in 2015 an exhibition at the Long Gallery, showcasing 10 years of artwork from the art group.
Chain Reaction at Tate Exchange - 5th November 2016
AdArt took part in Chain Reaction in partnership with The Dragon Café, Studio Upstairs, Arts Network and artist Jessica Voorsanger. The event celebrated the value of art for wellbeing through various activities. AdArt displayed artwork as part of the cube installation.
Over 500 people attended the event. “An amazing event which shines light on something which is considered taboo but should be accepted” Feedback from a participant.
Camberwell Arts Fair June 2016
AdArt took part in Camberwell Arts Fair, running an open studio event and workshop at Marina House. We were very pleased to have been comissioned to create a window display, which was a response to the theme of ‘metamorphosis’ through patterns, wire sculptures, shadows and reflections.
Changing Minds, Mental Health and Arts, festival at the Southbank Centre, 6th February 2016.
AdArt showcased work on a stall that was run by staff, participants and volunteers. The public were invited to leave a message or drawing with us in an interactive piece called 'Pause for Thoughts'
‘FLIGHT’- an event for World Mental Health Day, took place at the Tate Modern on the 10 October 2015. The day presented an afternoon of dynamic, fun and creative workshops and installations celebrating positive mental health. This creative event, suitable for all ages, was produced and presented by six local and national arts and mental health organisations, including SLaM AdArt. Over 400 people attended!
The Art Groups within Southwark and Lambeth Addiction Services created artwork for the installation and participants helped out on the day. Comments from the SLaM AdArt group included:
- "I can’t remember the last time I felt so happy, it was great to interact with children and families. Seeing the children have fun and being a part of that was wonderful."
- "It was good and challenging to describe our work within addictions to the public at the event."
SLaM AdArt: 10 years In Process' (2015) an exhibition in the Long Gallery, Maudsley Hospital reflecting the groups work over the past 10 years, providing an insight into the process behind each piece and how art plays a role in recovery. See the images here
