Gus Heafield

Chief Financial Officer

Gus is a Chartered Accountant with over twenty years’ experience across both the private and public sectors.  He has been the Director of Finance and Corporate Governance at the South London and Maudsley since 1999, a role which he has developed over the years to go far beyond that of a traditional finance role. As well as providing financial and governance advice to the Board, professional leadership for the finance and corporate governance and IT teams, ensuring high standards of integrated planning and probity and managing the development and implementation of the Trust's governance framework, Gus is also a champion for nursing quality and takes an active role in ensuring CQC compliance.  Gus was instrumental in driving the Trust’s FT application and securing FT status for SLaM in 2006.  Gus is also the project director for the NHSLA level 3 accreditation programme.

As part of Gus’ wider role in the NHS across London, he sits on the Commercial Board and is a member of the London Procurement Programme Steering Group. Gus joined the NHS 19 years ago as a consultant to the NHS Management Executive Trust Unit establishing the financial monitoring regime for the then newly created NHS Trusts.  Following this, he spent three years as Assistant Director at South Thames Regional Office assessing and performance managing NHS Trusts in south London. Gus was asked to take on the role of Acting Chief Executive when the former Chief Executive left the Trust at the end of September 2012, and continued until 14 October 2013. An Oxford chemistry graduate, Gus trained as a Chartered Accountant at Touche Ross working on a number of high profile plc audits as well as consultancy assignments.
