We are part of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC) one of only six Academic Health Science Centres in England designated by the Department of Health. King's Health Partners brings together a world-leading research led university (King’s College London) and three successful NHS Foundation Trusts (Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital and South London and Maudsley).
One of the reasons we formed King’s Health Partners was to become better at using healthcare research to improve services. At the moment, it takes an average of 17 years in this country for an academic discovery to lead to a new treatment becoming widely available to patients. This is something we want to change.
To help us do this we have created Clinical Academic Groups which bring people together who are experts in their field in areas such as cancer, dementia and diabetes. The aim of these Clinical Academic Groups is to offer patients the very best care and treatment, based upon reliable research evidence that it works.
One of the advantages of working together has been the opportunity to bring physical and mental health care and research much closer together. This is important because our own research has shown that people suffering serious mental illness live up to 20 years less than the national average.
In the past, the NHS has not been good at recognising the need to provide psychological support for people with physical health problems. The need to do this is shown by the fact that people who become depressed after a heart attack have a six times greater risk of dying within six months. Also, the outcomes and costs for long term conditions such as diabetes are much worse when mental health problems are also present.
Our Academic Health Sciences Centre sits at the heart of a diverse community in south London. We want to provide the people who live here with access to the best health services possible. At the same time, we aim to develop new treatments that will benefit people locally, nationally and internationally.
