Bethlem Royal Hospital is based in 260 acres of green space in Beckenham, South London. The oldest psychiatric hospital in the world is home to a number of our specialist services for people from across the UK who have been diagnosed with a mental disorder.
The Channel 4 programme ‘Life on the Psych Ward’ will take you inside River House, our specialist forensic unit where our staff work to ensure that offenders with mental health problems are assessed and treated effectively, in a secure environment. We aim to manage the risk, reduce further offending and support recovery throughout the person’s stay.
Many of the patients on these wards are sent to us from prison and referrals can range from those who have committed minor offences to serious crimes. We also get patients referred from psychiatric services where there may be a concern about the level of risk that they may pose.
For more information please visit our Forensic Services page.
Our qualified staff balance the needs of the offender with the risk to the public. They deliver a wide variety of one-to-one and group treatment programmes in state of the art facilities and because of this we are able to discharge the majority of our patients safe and well back into the community.
