New Director of Corporate Affairs appointed

Rachel Evans has been appointed as Director of Corporate Affairs for South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Rachel will join the Trust from her current position as Director of Corporate Effectiveness at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

A senior legal professional, Rachel has significant experience in transforming Board governance, developing stakeholder and staff engagement and has a particular interest in diversity and equality issues.

The announcement follows Trust Secretary Paul Mitchell’s decision to retire at the end of the year. Paul has worked at the Trust for the past nine years and has made a tremendous contribution to the organisation both in his role as Trust Secretary and as former Chief Executive of the Maudsley Charity.

Rachel was appointed after a rigorous selection process which included an assessment centre and interviews with representatives of the Council of Governors and the Trust’s Senior Leadership Team.

In her new role Rachel will act as Trust Secretary and will also be responsible for governance, compliance, membership, legal services and public engagement. She will also undertake risk management responsibilities and contribute to the formulation of strategy, policy and delivery of corporate and statutory objectives.

Roger Paffard, Chair of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust said:

“We offer Paul our heartfelt thanks for his outstanding contribution over the years. I know that those of you who worked closely with Paul find him to be a trusted colleague of considerable thoughtfulness and expertise and he will be missed greatly. We welcome Rachel into what is an important new role for the Trust. She will work closely with our Council of Governors to ensure rigour, and the highest standards of probity in meeting our obligations to our patients and as an NHS Foundation Trust.

“Rachel comes to the Trust with a wealth of experience leading corporate change across government departments. She has led teams to ensure excellent governance, and has driven Board effectiveness. The Senior Management Team and the Board look forward to working with her and to being involved with the development of this new role.”

Commenting on her appointment, Rachel said:

"I am delighted to be joining the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust as the Director of Corporate Affairs. I am passionate about the importance of high quality mental health care and its role in improving people's lives and their local communities. I have worked in a range of different roles within the public sector, and really hope that I will be able to draw on this experience to benefit the Trust, its staff and its patients."

Rachel is expected to start in post on 5 December 2016.
