Overview

Help us to understand what causes mental illness.

You will be reimbursed £120 if you take part in all parts of the study.

The study will involve completing questionnaires, having two brain scans, and one optional spinal tap procedure. We are looking for people aged between 18-65 who fit into any of the following groups: have a history of psychosis, depression, bipolar disorder, or no history of mental illness.

We cannot include people who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Inclusion Criteria

1. Male or female subject between the ages of 18 and 65 at the time of consent.
2. Patient subjects must have a diagnosis of a psychotic disorder (schizophrenia or other ICD20x category) or affective disorder (major depression, bipolar disorder or other ICD30x category).
3. Capacity to provide informed consent.

Exclusion Criteria

1. History of significant central nervous system co-morbidity or any unstable medical condition.
2. Subject does not tolerate venepuncture or scanning.
3. Participant would exceed 10 mSv radiation within the previous 12 months.
4. Pregnancy and/or breast-feeding.
5. History of allergic reaction to carbidopa, entacapone, or local anaesthetic (i.e. lidocaine).
6. Participation in a clinical study of unlicensed medicines within the previous 30 days.
7. Objection by the subject's physician or study principal investigator.
8. For healthy controls only: any history of mental illness.
