Dr Keren Smith completed a doctorate in clinical psychology at University College London in 2008. She then worked in community CAMHS and Adolescent Outreach services, before moving to the SLAM National and Specialist DBT CAMHS in 2009 when the service first began.

Keren’s work within the DBT Service has included taking a lead role with young people with co-morbid difficulties in self-harm and suicidal behaviour alongside an eating disorder who present with difficulties relating to under and over control. She trained in the newly developed Radically Open DBT model in 2016. Keren has a particular interest in working with complex, high risk and difficult to engage young people who might otherwise not access therapeutic input. This includes working with young people with a history of trauma and symptoms associated with CPTSD; she has completed further training in specialist trauma focused models including EMDR and DBT-PE. Keren also has an interest and experience in working with young people who use drugs or alcohol to manage their emotions and has completed additional DBT training in this area. Keren has completed training in Attachment Based Family Therapy and works with families to improve relationships and family functioning.

Keren is currently working with colleagues to develop structures that support a successful transition for young people with difficulties associated with emotional dysregulation from N&S CAMHS to adult mental health services.
Keren also offers consultation to other services who have set up a DBT service or are in the process of doing so.
Keren has regularly presented at national and international conferences, and provided teaching and training to a range of organisations.
