Adult Mental Health Services (Local)

This service is for people who live in:
The Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Ward for men aged 18-65, requiring intensive psychiatric care. We also provide short-stay intensive assessment and treatment for people with acute mental illness who have been referred from other inpatient services. Acute illnesses start quickly and have distressing symptoms. This service is for people who live in the London Borough of Lewisham. We offer psychiatric assessment, care and treatment in hospital, which helps reduce the risk to self and others.

We work closely with the nursing and psychology teams at the hospital.

A small number of people are brought to hospital under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act. This is a power that police officers can use if someone is in a public place and the police have concerns about them. We have a separate, designated place of safety, a ‘136 Suite’ (Place of Safety), where they can be admitted, assessed and cared for. The police also have powers under the Mental Capacity Act to take someone, either from a public place or their home, to a place of safety - normally this would be to an Emergency Department.
