Summary:
Southwark Child and Family Service offers specialist assessment and treatment to children and young people, up to 12 years old, who have complex mental health problems.  Our service also includes the Hope Project; a mini-team for children and young people, up to 18 years old, who have been affected by trauma.

We accept referrals from GPs, health professionals, social workers, school staff, the voluntary sector, and self-referrals from families. The children and young people that are referred to us must be registered with a Southwark GP.

We work with children, young people and their families to help them gain a better understanding of their issues, and the type of intervention that may help before agreeing a care plan.

At times we may need to work with other agencies if the difficulties faced by a family are quite complex.  We will usually work with the referrer, and other agencies to work out how CAMHS can help.

We can help with the following issues:
  • Emotional problems
  • Behaviouralproblems
  • Attachment difficulties
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Attention and concentration difficulties
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Trauma and loss
  • Mental health impacts of abuse including sexual abuse,
  • Self-harm
Interventions we offer include:
  • Comprehensive assessment to clarify the diagnosis and care plan
  • Assessment of risk and safety planning
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Trauma-focused intervention
  • Parenting interventions including the ‘parent and child game’ (PCG)
  • Family therapy
  • Art psychotherapy
  • Medication
  • Consultation
Service user involvement

We run a monthly service user meeting, called the CAMHS Council, where children, young people, and their families can get involved.
