Dr Rob Harland announced as new Medical Director

Dr Harland has worked with the Trust since 2002, most recently as Clinical Director for Lambeth Adult Mental Health Services and Clinical Director for the Psychosis Clinical Academic Group within King’s Health Partners. He has also been the Trust’s Caldicott Guardian since October 2020, making sure people’s health and care information is used properly.

In a career spanning more than 20 years’, Dr Harland has held a variety of senior clinical roles, both inpatient and in the community and is a respected leader amongst our partners, stakeholders and service users. This wealth of experience and insights will prove invaluable as we continue to deliver on our strategy and to make South London and Maudsley a great place to work.

David Bradley, Chief Executive of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust said:

I am delighted to announce Dr Harland’s appointment as our new Medical Director. With more than 20 years’ experience of caring for people in our boroughs, both on inpatient wards and in our community, Rob‘s reputation for clinical excellence and leadership will be invaluable as we deliver our strategy to provide outstanding mental health care and ensuring South London and Maudsley is a great place to work.

Dr Rob Harland said:

I am incredibly excited to be taking on this role at such a crucial time for the Trust. The ambitions outlined in our strategy are beginning to bear fruit and having an impact on the experience of those we care for. I look forward to continuing to improve clinical care and working to remove barriers to access and inequality faced by our most underserved communities. I am also looking forward to the opening of New Douglas Bennett House this year, a project I have been closely involved with to replace the outdated facilities at Lambeth Hospital and a significant milestone in our £186m modernisation programme.

We would like to thank Dr Sarah Cornick for her tireless work as Interim Medical Director since last November. Her commitment has ensured we have been able to continue to provide high quality care to those who rely on us as well as maintaining momentum on delivering our strategy during a period of transition.

Dr Harland will start in his new role on 13 March after a handover period in February. Dr Cornick will continue to play a senior role in medical leadership in the Trust.
