  10. Eileen Skellern 1 Ward and Place of Safety

Eileen Skellern 1 (ES1) is a psychiatric intensive care ward (PICU) at the Maudsley Hospital. We offer care for women, aged 16-65, who live in the London Borough of Southwark.

Our team includes health and social care staff from a range of professions. We provide secure psychiatric and intensive hospital care for people who have severe and ongoing mental illnesses whose behaviour makes them unsafe, either to themselves or others, and who cannot be treated in an open ward.

We provide assessment, treatment and intensive nursing care.

A small number of people are brought to hospital under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act. This is a power that police officers can use if someone is in a public place and the police have concerns about them. We have a separate, designated place of safety, a '136 Suite', where they can be admitted, assessed and cared for. The police also have powers under the Mental Capacity Act to take someone, either from a public place or their home, to a place of safety - normally this would be to an Emergency Department.

  12. Imagining Futures

Imagining Futures is a programme combining mental wellness strategies and arts practice for young women living in Lambeth or Southwark.

Imagining Futures uses drama, creative writing, music, photography and film combined with dialectical behaviour therapy and mindfulness to support mental wellness of young women aged 14 to 18 years old.

The project supports young women whose immediate and longer-term mental health may be affected by issues including self-harm, social exclusion, exploitation, vulnerability, deprivation and gang association.

This project is aimed at young women who live in Southwark or Lambeth and have a history of self-harm or are at risk of self-harm.

    Our weekly workshops will:

    • Use creative writing, photography and drama with DBT and mindfulness
    • Aim to build self-esteem, empathy and confidence
    • Be a caring, supportive and safe environment
    • Develop group skills and social behaviour

  13. Injectable Opiate Treatment (Maudsley Hospital)

This is a specialist service, available to people from across the UK.

GPs, consultants, health professionals, referrers and commissioners can receive comprehensive information about this national service by contacting the service directly.

    Overview
Our clinic provides injectable opiate treatment for people with a severe heroin addiction, where previous optimised first line drug treatment, such as oral methadone maintenance, has been shown to be insufficient.

Patients are prescribed injectable heroin (diamorphine) or methadone, which is administered at the clinic under supervision and supplementary oral medication can be provided between injecting sessions to prevent opiate withdrawal and also if it is desirable or necessary for them not attend a session. The clinic is open every day and all injectable doses are supervised, so there is no potential for abuse or transference into the community. People typically attend the clinic up to twice daily, seven days a week.

In addition to this specialised pharmacotherapy intervention, our nurses, doctors and recovery support workers work alongside existing local providers to compliment and bolster existing recovery focussed care plans that address the underlying causes of addiction, and the related health issues an individual may be experiencing.

Where appropriate skills and expertise exist we support local community teams to develop their own injectable opiate treatment services, allowing the patient to return to their local service provider at the earliest opportunity, once sufficient progress and stability of their recovery has been achieved.
