Cannabis clinic for patients with psychosis

How our service can help you

The Cannabis Clinic for Patients with Psychosis was established in 2019 by Clinical Lead Dr. Marta Di Forti and was initially funded by the Maudsley Charity as a trial. The clinic is the first in the UK to provide specialist community dual diagnosis support for adults with psychosis who are seeking support around their cannabis use. Due to the success of the clinic it has since been commissioned by the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) since 2022.

The clinic utilises a dual diagnosis approach. This is when an individual has both a mental health condition and a comorbid substance use disorder. The benefit of this approach is the ability to explore links between a person’s lived experience of psychosis and potentially problematic cannabis use.

The clinic is open to SLaM patients who are motivated to explore changes to their cannabis use through setting individual goals which could include: abstinence, reduction planning, controlled usage or harm reduction.

The clinic offers the following support:

  • 1:1 weekly sessions with an allocated keyworker
  • Flexible appointment options, including in-person, online, telephone and hybrid
  • Internal referrals to Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)
  • Reduction planning
  • Relapse prevention
