in 1915, initially as a military hospital and then
in 1923 as a psychiatric hospital.

Visiting by car
From central London: follow the A215 from the Elephant and Castle. The hospital is located on the left-hand side of Denmark Hill.
Congestion charge: Maudsley Hospital is not in the London congestion charge zone however is in the Ultra Low Emission zone.
Parking: At present the Trust does not charge for visitor and patient parking, however because we use an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, all vehicles parking on the site must be registered with the Trusts Estates Parking Team. Please contact your clinical team who be able to request a temporary parking permit for you or your escort.
Please note that there is limited parking for visitors at the site and we cannot guarantee to provide a parking space. Any vehicles parking on site without Trust authorisation could be subject to a fine or parking notice.

By rail: The nearest station is Denmark Hill (Zone 2). From Central London - Blackfriars, Farringdon, St Pancras and Victoria. There are direct connections to Bromley, Orpington, Bexleyheath and Sevenoaks as well as services to north London, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Kent.
Denmark Hill is also connected to London Overground which provides direct services to Clapham Junction and Highbury and Islington.
By underground: The nearest stations are Oval and Elephant and Castle, from there the journey has to be completed by bus or taxi.
By bus: Routes 40, 42, 68 (24 hrs) 176 (24 hrs), 185, 468, 484. Stopping at Camberwell Green (10 minutes away) are 12, 35, 36, 45, 171, 345, 436.
