Evans Ward is ‘Team of the Month’ for May 2026

Last week, we proudly recognised Evans Ward as ‘Team of the Month’ for May 2026. The Team was presented this award by Adeniyi Aderinto, Service Director for Lewisham, in recognition of exceptional professionalism, compassion and teamwork during a recent fire incident on the ward.

After the incident, senior leaders, including Ade Odunlade, Interim CEO, praised the team for going above and beyond to keep patients safe, calm and dignified in very challenging circumstances. Several staff were also recognised for their individual efforts, including Taiwo Adeyemi, who was highlighted for his extraordinary actions in safely supporting more than nine patients from a smoke‑filled ward, and showing remarkable compassion by giving his own shoes to a patient to protect their dignity.

Evans Ward is a specialist male inpatient ward based at the Ladywell Unit at Lewisham Hospital, focused on supporting individuals experiencing a first episode of psychosis.

Brian Tafirenyika, Ward Manager, shared: "What people may not always realise is the level of specialist support involved in working with first-episode psychosis. The team not only provides clinical care, but also invests significant time in building trust, engaging patients who may be experiencing distressing symptoms for the first time, and supporting their families. Much of the work happens behind the scenes, particularly around care planning, risk management, and coordinating with community services for ongoing recovery.

I am incredibly proud, as Ward Manager, of the team’s resilience, dedication, and their consistent success in managing bed flow effectively while maintaining high standards of care. Their commitment, teamwork, and focus on positive outcomes truly set them apart."
