National QI Week: Chief Medical Officer Derek Tracy shares his thoughts on driving continuous improvement

To celebrate National QI week, Katie Walker, Principal Quality Improvement Lead spoke to our Chief Medical Officer, Derek Tracy about the role of clinical leadership in driving continuous improvement.

Derek shared how often our staff know how to make their teams better, they are full of ideas and are very clear about what they would change. He notes that the challenge is with permission from clinical leadership to try, to get things wrong at times but ultimately to drive change.

During the interview, Derek shared that he felt a good team and good clinical leaders should find time to look at our systems, challenge them and take steps to improve, despite the time pressures we all face.

He concluded: “If we can measure clinical outcomes, we can try to check what’s driving it. We must ask, what was it that we did that helped the patient get well or what isn’t working? If we go back to the fact that we can have failure, that could really drive a quality improvement process to say we can see the change in patients.”
