Professor Dag Aarsland receives Inge-Grundke-Iqbal Award for Alzheimer’s Research
Professor Dag Aarsland is one of eight researchers to be honoured by the Alzheimer’s Association at their 2026 International Conference. The association presented eight scientific awards to recognise researchers’ expertise, achievements and impact in the field of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia research. Professor Aarsland is a world-leading dementia researcher and clinician.
The Inge Grundke-Iqbal Award for Alzheimer's Research is presented to the senior author of the most impactful study published in the field over the past two years. The purpose of the award is to highlight the tremendous work being done in Alzheimer's research today and to honour the pioneering work of Dr. Inge Grundke-Iqbal. The award recognises Professor Aarsland’s multinational studies that have shaped our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease dementia and Lewy body dementia.

Professor Aarsland joined the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience in January 2016, from Karolinska Institutet where he has been professor of clinical dementia research since 2011. He is renowned throughout the world in the field of Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s disease but has made contributions across the spectrum of old age psychiatry.
He leads the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre in Brain Health at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, in collaboration with King’s IoPPN and the University of Exeter. This centre aims to expedite the development and integration of emerging technologies in healthcare, with a focus on swiftly delivering benefits to patients.
He is Director of the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing, in the School of Academic Psychiatry and the Co-Director of Ageing Research at King's (ARK) and leads the EU-IHI funded €21m PREDICTOM consortium to pioneer early detection of Alzheimer's Disease using an AI driven screening platform. He is the Clinical Co-Lead of the EU-IHI funded €38m ACCESS-AD consortium to advance clinical care and equity through scalable solutions in diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
Professor Aarsland will give his prize plenary lecture this week as part of the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in London, the world’s largest gathering of researchers from around the world focused on Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
