Green light for affordable homes will improve mental health services
Last night, Lambeth Council gave the go-ahead for a new housing scheme on the site of Lambeth Hospital. The plans include hundreds of new affordable homes and a new community space.
As part of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust’s ambitious plans to modernise its buildings and services, Lambeth Hospital is set to close in 2023.
Lambeth Hospital is no longer fit for purpose. As part of its modernisation programme, the Trust is investing £186 million in modern mental healthcare services and facilities to provide better care and a better experience to local people.
Lambeth Hospital’s inpatient wards are moving to a brand-new building on the Trust’s Maudsley Hospital campus in Denmark Hill. Construction of the purpose-built facility is well underway and will offer the high-quality environment for treatment and recovery that people who use our services deserve.
The plans to redevelop the surplus Lambeth Hospital site have been formed through extensive consultation with the public and Lambeth Council to ensure they meet the needs of local people. The scheme includes 553 new homes of which 50 per cent will be affordable. Of these 70 per cent will be socially rented and 30 per cent intermediate housing.
The car free development also includes more than 1,000 cycle parking spaces and incorporates PV panels, green roofs, Air Source Heat Pumps, and a Sustainable Urban Drainage System.
The scheme also includes a new community space on Landor Road for local groups.
As well as providing much needed new homes for local people, these plans will also help release value from the Trust’s surplus estate to reinvest back into its current and future hospital and community facilities.
