Maudsley Talks: Menopause

The Trust is marking Menopause Awareness Month this October with a whole range of events and promotion of our new menopause policy to support staff in the workplace as they experience menopause.

A highlight of the month was the latest in the Maudsley Talks series where we heard from a range of experts on the topic of menopause and mental health. It was a space for a discussion between psychiatry, psychology and gynaecology and featured a panel discussion between Professor Michael Craig, Professor Deborah Bruce and Dr Emily DuPre.

The evening was led by Trust Chair, Jane Bailey and kicked off with a talk from Dr Maria "Etta" Nettis about her research in the field. Recently awarded funding from Maudsley Charity, the project aims to improve the experience of menopause for more than 900 women of menopausal age with psychosis across the Trust and support clinicians to embed menopause into routine care.

The discussion ranged from menopause resources and policies, to its interaction with mental health conditions, to addressing stigma and how access to support has improved over the years but there is still a way to go.

Professor Deborah Bruce, a nationally recognised menopause specialist, and a senior medical educator with over 30 years’ experience working in women’s health, rounded off the evening with her key takeaway:

"Let's get over the stigma, let's talk about menopause. The more we talk about it, the more people will understand."
