Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework shortlisted for HSJ Award

We’re proud to announce that South London and Maudsley’s Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework (PCREF) has been shortlisted for the prestigious, national HSJ Award for NHS Race Equality - recognising our outstanding work to advance race equity in mental health care. Our Trust is committed to becoming an anti-racism organisation, and PCREF is one of the main pillars of our Anti-Racism Action Plan
PCREF is a first-of-its-kind, co-produced framework developed with service users, carers, and racialised communities. At SLaM, the pilot has focused on addressing the longstanding inequalities that have impacted how Black people are treated and supported within mental health services.
PCREF’s positive impact is reflected in growing trust, stronger relationships and care that has become more attuned to people’s identities, needs and experiences.
“We have evidence of real, measurable change. We have stories that speak to healing, trust, and transformation.” - Shania Ruddock, Deputy Director of the Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework (PCREF)
This shortlisting is a tribute to the service users, carers, community partners, and staff across the Trust who are driving this work forward - together.
It’s also recognition that change isn’t just possible – it’s already underway. From 2026, the PCREF pilot will transition into a core part of how services are developed and delivered across the Trust
We look forward to the awards ceremony in November, when the winner will be announced.
