Celebrating research- Red4Research day

Tanya Shlovogt is the Director of Research Quality, Head of Joint R&D Office of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and IoPPN. This #redforresearch day (June 16th) she tells us why research is so important.

“Research is at the heart of better clinical care and I am proud to be able to say the our Trust leads the way in researching better treatments and ways to improve people’s lives.

Our aim is to ensure that all service users can take part in research, supported and informed by clinical staff. We ensure that all research in the Trust, including commercial research, is undertaken to the highest scientific and ethical standards.

Research is really important as it provides evidence to drive better treatment outcomes for our patients and staff. Research contributes crucial understanding and insights in building meaningful change for future generations. People that take part in research tell us that being involved is a chance to get their voices heard, improves their mental health and is a learning opportunity. We want everyone to have the opportunity to take part.

That’s why we will be lighting up our buildings; to show our commitment to supporting research and development at the Trust.

Red for Research Day brings together all those participating, supporting, and undertaking research working collectively within health and social care research.

But it’s not just about raising awareness. We will also be launching our brand-new web pages – ‘Take Part in Research’ – a new resource aimed at service users, and the wider public, to help more people to get involved in mental health research taking place at SLaM and IoPPN.

The list of studies on our web pages include a variety of research opportunities and is part of our strategy commitment to offer opportunities to all patients, and be a catalyst for change, building on our world-leading expertise through our partnership with IoPPN.

This is a fantastic development, and we encourage everyone to take a look at the site and get involved in sharing research opportunities. Research is at the heart of everything we do and helps us to expand our knowledge and practices whilst providing opportunities for novel treatments and therapies. Our new database will help us to reach more people, particularly service users, as we want everyone to have equal opportunity to take part and benefit from the world leading research that the Trust offers."
