Our employment services

Work Well includes nine employment support services based across South London and Maudsley. Our teams work across Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark.

Our employment services provide individually tailored support designed to improve the health and well-being of our service users.

Most of our teams follow one of two models. They are:

1. Individual Placement and Support (IPS) Teams

Our IPS teams support service users receiving support from a secondary care treatment team. Anyone who wants to work is eligible, no matter the diagnosis or how unwell they might be.

The IPS model follows eight key principles to get the best outcomes for clients.

An important part of the IPS model is for employment coaches to develop relationships with local employers, uncovering opportunities for clients in the hidden job market.

2. NHS Talking Therapies Employment Teams

NHS Talking Therapies Employment Teams support clients who are receiving treatment from an NHS Talking Therapies service.

Clients will receive up to six sessions with an employment coach who will work closely with their therapist to create a tailored action plan to help clients achieve their employment goals.

Other employment support

We also have teams based in Croydon and Lewisham who provide other employment support for service users receiving support from primary and secondary care treatment teams.

You can find out more on our employment teams page.

In addition to one-on-one employment coaching, we have a range of projects and initiatives that provide more support and opportunity for our service users.

Employment Law Advice Project

Discrimination in the workplace is sadly a reality for some people with mental health conditions.

The Employment Law Advice Project (ELAP), in partnership with University House Legal Advice Centre, makes sure that clients facing unfair treatment by their employers can access free legal advice, regardless of financial situation.

Clients referred to the project receive one or more appointments with a solicitor who specialises in employment law. They will look carefully at each case and advise on what options are available.

Support from the project is only for Work Well clients who must be referred by their employment coach.

If you’re receiving mental health support from South London and Maudsley and are experiencing unfair treatment in the workplace, find out what employment support is available.

Employ Well

It’s estimated that up to 70% of jobs are in the hidden job market. This means they are never advertised publicly.

At the same time, mental health problems are becoming more prevalent in the workplace.

Our Individual Placement and Support (IPS) teams build relationships with local employers to tackle these issues as part of our Employ Well project.

Employment coaches work with employers in industries and sectors that match their clients’ interests and skills.

By working directly with employers, our teams can:

  • Provide training, guidance and advice on improving staff wellbeing and creating more inclusive workplaces for people with mental health conditions
  • Support employers with their recruitment needs by matching well suited clients to job vacancies
