Results Day: Looking After Your Wellbeing

Exam

Results day can feel stressful, and that's completely normal. Whether you're feeling excited, nervous or a mix of both, there are things you can do to help manage your worries and feel more in control.

Try to focus on the things you can influence, rather than the things you can't. Having a plan, getting enough rest and avoiding comparisons with others online can all help reduce stress.

Creating Distance from Worries

If you find yourself overthinking, these techniques can help take your mind off your worries:

  1. Switch off from results day thoughts. Give your brain a break by focusing on something completely unrelated. For example, try naming things from A to Z in a category such as football teams, animals or films.

  2. Make plans for the day. Arrange to spend time with friends or family or do something you enjoy. Keeping busy can help stop worries from taking over.

  3. Try calm breathing. Taking slower, deeper breaths can help your body feel calmer and reduce feelings of stress or panic.

Focus on What's in Your Control

  • Be prepared Have important contact details ready, such as universities, apprenticeship providers or clearing so you know what to do next whatever your results.

  • Get a good night's sleep Try to wind down at least an hour before bed. Rest can make it easier to cope with stress and think clearly the next day.

On Results Day

  • Celebrate your achievements. Take time to enjoy the moment and celebrate with friends or family. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself to have everything figured out right away.

  • If things don't go as planned it's okay to feel upset or disappointed. Remember that you're not alone. Talk to someone you trust, whether that's a friend, family member, teacher or another supportive adult. If you're feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to pause and focus on slowing down your breathing.

  • Remember: your results do not define you Exam results are just one part of your story. Your personality, interests, values and passions are what make you who you are. There are many different routes to achieving your goals, and one set of results does not determine your future.
