Wellbeing, connection and calm: Transforming Care in Autism event for staff, service users and carers

On September 30th, the Transforming Care in Autism (TCA) team hosted a wellbeing event for staff, service users and carers as part of their current QI project.
The team’s QI project on facilitating optimal care and understanding sensory needs started in April 2024 with funding from NHS England. This project aimed to address unmet sensory and communication needs of autistic service users.
By providing communication and sensory toolkits, autism specific training and skill building, the team are working toward supporting autistic service users in their day to day lives.
The day was filled with activities, relaxing lo-fi music, snacks and a shared sense of community. The range of activities included mindful exercises, essential oil aromatherapy, origami-making, colouring, tote bag drawing and lots more.
The TCA team provides indirect and direct clinical input to support health professionals and services to work with autistic adults who are at risk of admission or currently inpatients in hospitals.
The team aims to reduce and prevent the number of inpatient admission and support successful and timely discharge back to the community. The team provide a development pathway to help develop knowledge, skills and confidence in working with autistic service users who have mental health needs or present with behaviour that “challenges”.
