Zoi’s Journey as a Befriending Volunteer

Zoi's lifelong passion for volunteering and her commitment to mental health support have made her an invaluable member of our volunteering team.

Motivation to Become a Befriending Volunteer

Zoi's journey to becoming a befriending volunteer began in her home country of Greece, where she had always been actively involved in volunteering. After moving to London for work, Zoi's desire to continue making a positive impact led her to explore volunteering opportunities.

"After my first two years in London, I started searching for ways to volunteer and bring happiness to others" Zoi shares.

That's when I discovered the opportunity at Maudsley Hospital. Besides, as a Health and Wellbeing Champion at my company, I already help my colleagues whenever they need someone to talk to or seek advice.

Creating Meaningful Interactions

In her role, Zoi focuses on providing companionship and a non-judgmental space for service users. "I usually sit with them and talk." Zoi explains.

Most of them really enjoy talking and open up to me, sharing their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or medication.

Zoi also engages in activities such as playing games or drawing with the service users, helping to create a friendly and supportive environment.

Overcoming Challenges

Zoi has found her experience as a befriending volunteer to be overwhelmingly positive. "So far, there are no challenges. Everything goes well, and I have good relationships with most of the patients," she notes. However, she respects the boundaries of those who prefer not to engage.

Making a Difference

The impact of Zoi's efforts is evident in the responses of the service users. "They seem to enjoy spending time with me. They smile, thank me, and often hug me, asking when I will visit them again," Zoi shares.

Just talking makes them feel relieved and cared for.

The genuine connections she forms with service users highlight the significant difference she is making in their lives.

Personal Growth and Insights

Zoi's interest in mental health dates back to her childhood. "I've always been fascinated by how the brain works, watching people's emotions and behaviours" she reflects. Her curiosity led her to read numerous books and attend various seminars on mental health. Through her volunteering, Zoi has deepened her understanding of the importance of mental health support.

Mental health requires deep study. It only takes a moment for someone's state to shift dramatically. People need support, and they should have it before it's too late. That's why I want to help as much as I can.
