Annual international mental health nursing research conference

Lily Kpodo, a Service User Research Ambassador at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, presented a poster at a mental health nursing research conference. This poster outlined Lily’s, and her former colleague Jemma, work in the role over the past year.

Service users in mental health are experts by experience. They can play a vital role in all processes of NHS mental health Research and Development activity, helping to bridge the gap between service users and clinicians.

The presented poster gave an overview of Lily and Jemma’s core engagement activity and initiatives developed in the first 12 months since they started in their Service User Research Ambassadors roles, with the aspiration that lessons learnt may be helpful to other organisations and Trusts considering similar initiatives.

Lily Kpodo, Service User Research Ambassador, said, “The Mental Health Nursing conference was a great opportunity to meet other health professionals and engage in conversations about the importance of mental health research in the NHS. The poster gave me the chance to talk about some of our past projects and the importance of ensuring service user participation in research, is at the forefront of the work we do as clinicians.”

The annual international mental health nursing research conference hosted by St Catherine's College in conjunction with HEE, NHSE/I and MHNAUK took place from 8-9 September. The theme for the 2022 conference was Mental Health Nursing in Challenging Times.
