Accessing Sexual Health Care for People with Severe Mental Illness

Overview

Aim?

We are aiming to talk to people about their experiences (or lack of experiences) with sexual health services.

Who?        

We are looking for people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, psychosis, schizoaffective or bipolar disorder who are 18 or over. We are particularly interested in talking to people who are LGBT+ and who are from ethnic minorities.

What?        

You will be asked your views and experiences of sexual and reproductive healthcare in private 1-2-1 interviews.

Where?        

You will have the option to either talk to us in person, on Microsoft Teams via a computer or laptop, or on the phone.

How?        

If you contact us, we can talk you through the study details. Youthen have at least 24 hours to consider if you would like to be involved. You can withdraw at any time. 

You will be given a £20 voucher as a thank you for your time.

Inclusion Criteria

Study 1

  • Are aged 18 or over 
  • Have received a formal diagnosis of SMI described above from a mental health professional
  • Have the ability to give informed consent 

Study 2

  • Consultants in sexual health and/or reproductive care; nurses/nursing associates in sexual health and/or reproductive care; receptionists and other non-clinical support (i.e. health advisors, healthcare assistants) staff who have contact with patients in sexual health and/or reproductive care, currently working in sexual healthcare provision or have done so in the last 3 years
  • Have the ability to give informed consent

Exclusion Criteria

Study 1

  • Are considered by the researcher(s) to be too unwell or distressed to participate in the study
  • Are unable to give informed consent to the study 

Study 2

  • Are not currently working in sexual healthcare provision or have not done so in the last 3 years
  • Are unable to give informed consent to the study
