Brain Imaging in Babies (BIBS)

Overview

We would like to invite your family to take part in our study. The purpose of our study is to better understand infant brain development. We also wish to learn about factors that protect or increase the risk for Autism Spectrum Disorders and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD).

Inclusion Criteria

  • Infants with or without a close family member with ADHD or ASD
  • Infants of mothers with or without depression in pregnancy
  • Infants with or without a structural brain abnormality identified at routine antenatal screen and confirmed with clinical MRI.

Exclusion Criteria

Infants with contraindications for MRI (eg metal implant), or in the case of foetal scans, mothers with contraindications for MRI. Infants of mothers with antenatal, medical or psychiatric conditions or exposures which may independently alter infant development including significant chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, heart conditions, epilepsy, serious respiratory condition needing regular medication; genetic conditions such as Down's syndrome or fragile X; evidence of learning difficulties; exposure to illicit drugs; alcohol consumption more than 1-2 units per week; significant psychiatric diagnosis requiring medication (apart from depression). Additional exclusion criteria include: Obstetric complications and infant with medical disorder including active infection or major congenital anomaly (other than enlarged ventricles).

In addition, anyone unable to give informed consent; Where possible non-native English speakers will be recruited, however we have limited funds to provide translation services and in the interests of MRI safety and accuracy of behavioural/symptom ratings, it will be necessary to exclude individuals without a working knowledge of English in order to prioritize screen for MRI safety and accurate behavioural data.
