What is it about?
Zoé is doing research about what it’s like to use a communication aid when talking to a therapist.
Who can take part?
Adults with learning disabilities who have used a communication aid in therapy. And their carers, family or professional.
Psychological professionals who work with people with learning disabilities who use communication aids.

Learning DisordersInclusion Criteria
- Over 18 years old.
Communication Aid users:
- Eligible for learning disabilities services.
- Use communication aids as their primary method of communication or to support natural speech.
- Have used communication aids in an appointment with a psychological professional.
Psychological professionals
- Qualified psychological professional (e.g. clinical psychologists, psychotherapist, counselling psychologists,
behavioural practitioners, psychiatrists). - Has directly worked with someone who uses communication aids and is eligible for learning disabilities services.
Supporters/carers
- Be asked by the communication aid user to support them in their interview.
- Have supported someone who has used communication aids with a psychological professional.
Exclusion Criteria
- People with communication difficulties in the absence of learning difficulties.
- Unqualified psychological professionals e.g. assistant psychologists.
- Participants for whom there is a risk of significant harm or distress during their time in the study. This will be screened for in a pre-participation interview.
