PREDICTSELF: Evaluating a predictive processing model of dissociative identity disorder (DID)

Overview

Help us learn about the brain mechanisms underlying our sense of self.

Are you:

  • 18-65 years old?
  • Experiencing symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder such as re-experiencing a traumatic event in the form of flashbacks or dreams?
  • Or medically healthy and in good mental health?
  • Or experiencing symptoms of Dissociative Identity Disorder such as significant identity confusion or notable alterations in your sense of self?

If so, you may be eligible to participate in the PREDICTSELF study.

Participation involves thee sessions across one week including:

  • Eligibility screening
  • Cognitive tasks
  • EEG (brainwaves) recording

Inclusion Criteria

Participants will range between the ages of 18 to 65 and will include both males and females.

Participants in the DID group will meet the criteria for DID based on the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 Dissociative Disorders. Their treatment will have progressed to at least stage two of phase-oriented treatment for DID, as outlined by the International Society for Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD, 2011), to ensure they can engage in the study with more capacity to become less distressed.

Participants in the PTSD group will meet the criteria for PTSD based on the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5; Weathers et al., 2018).

Participants in the non-clinical control group will have no lifetime or current psychiatric diagnoses. All participants must be fluent in English in order to engage with the clinical assessments and experimental tasks.

Exclusion Criteria

Participants will be excluded from the study if they are involved in current research or have recently been involved in any research, are outside the 18 to 65 age range, do not speak fluent English, or suffer from a neurological illness or brain injury based on self-report.

DID patients will be excluded if they have not yet progressed to stage two of phase-oriented treatment.

PTSD patients will be excluded if they meet criteria for the dissociative subtype of PTSD based on the Dissociative Subtype of PTSD Scale (Wolf et al., 2017) or if they meet criteria for a comorbid dissociative disorder based on the SCID-D (Steinberg, 2023).

Individuals in the non-clinical control group will be excluded if they have a lifetime or current psychiatric disorder.
