Bethlem Men’s Shed Celebrated at UK Shed of the Year Awards
The Bethlem Men’s Shed, a woodworking group run by the Bethlem Royal Hospital’s Occupational Therapy Department and supported by Maudsley Charity, has been nationally recognised for its transformative work. Specialist Instructor Christopher Oldfield received the Chairman’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Men’s Shed Movement at the prestigious UK Shed of the Year Awards.
What is a Men’s Shed?
A Men’s Shed provides a welcoming and regular space where men can socialise, learn woodworking skills, and support their mental health. Known as the ‘Shedders,’ the Bethlem group has been meeting weekly for the past two years. They work on a variety of practical and personal projects, from crafting trellises, bird boxes, and planters for the Bethlem Occupational Therapy Garden to creating decorative boxes inspired by the hospital’s rich history.
This unique initiative is part of the Occupational Therapy Department at Bethlem Royal Hospital, where it plays a vital role in fostering connection and supporting mental health recovery.
A National Stage for Recognition
Held in the historic State Rooms of the Speaker’s House at the House of Commons, Westminster, the awards ceremony provided a grand platform to recognise the incredible impact of Men’s Sheds across the UK. Hosted by Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the event was attended by Members of Parliament and shed representatives, making it a memorable celebration of community driven initiatives.
Promoting Community and Connection
Taking place on International Men’s Day (Tuesday 19th November), the Shed Awards highlighted the role of Men’s Sheds in building connections and fostering community spirit. Among the attendees were Christopher Oldfield and Head Occupational Therapist Peter O’Hare, who represented the Bethlem Men’s Shed.
For the Shedders, the Shed is more than just a woodworking group—it’s a lifeline. One member shared, “The Shed has changed my life.” This feedback highlights the vital role the Shed plays in supporting mental health and helping people reconnect and rebuild their lives.
Looking to the Future
The recognition at the UK Shed of the Year Awards celebrates the innovation of Christopher Oldfield and the entire Bethlem Men’s Shed team. Their inspiring work demonstrates how creative and collaborative initiatives not only transform lives but also play a key role in fostering mental health recovery and community wellbeing.
