Celebrating our Capital Estates and Facilities Team

The Craft Behind the Care: Meet one of our Trust Carpenter’s Luke Sparkhall
This National Estates and Facilities Day, we shine a spotlight on Luke Sparkhall, a dedicated Carpenter with the Capital, Estates and Facilities (CEF) team, who has been helping to keep our sites safe, functional, and welcoming for the past three years.
Luke is one of five skilled carpenters supporting key sites including the Maudsley and Lambeth Hospitals, Marina House, St Giles, and the Lister Primary Care Centre. He’s also part of the on-call rota every other week, ensuring urgent repairs are handled swiftly and safely out-of-hours.
“There’s no such thing as a typical day,” Luke says. “Most of our work is reactive—anything from smashed doors and broken windows to fixing soap dispensers or putting up shelves. You never know what’s coming next.”
While much of the job is fast-paced and unpredictable, Luke and his team also take on planned maintenance. One current project involves replacing rotten boards outside the garden doors at AL1, ensuring the space remains safe and accessible for service users.
Locks are among the most common callouts—anything that goes wrong with them, Luke and the team are there to fix it.
Working alongside our electricians, plumbers, painters, and gardeners, Luke and the carpentry team play a vital role in maintaining the environments that support mental health recovery. His work may often go unseen, but its impact is definitely felt.
Thank you, Luke and colleagues, for your craftsmanship, commitment, and care.
