For International Nurses Day 2024 we wanted to shine a light on our internationally educated nurses who are been an important part of the care we deliver.

We have been speaking to ward managers, charge nurses and some international nurses to find out about their role, what skills they bring to the cohort and what we can learn from them.

June Judd

We spoke to June Judd, Ward Manager of our Mother and Baby Unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital June told us that one of the biggest skills that the international nurses working in her team is their management of physical health, medication and potential side effects. This stems from the differences in international education and practice.

Evelyn Mowa and Kimberly McDonald

Evelyn Mowa and Kimberly McDonald both believe that international nurses bring a different insight into mental health and wellbeing.

Evelyn Mowa, Ward Manager at the Croydon PICU reflected that the international nurses have excellent therapeutic skills and are committed like all nurses to getting to know their patients. She said: “They are so supportive to the team and help with the smooth running of things day to day. They bring an energy and enthusiasm because of the opportunity to come and live and work in the UK It has made a big different to the team having them join.”

Liji Jiji Chacko

We also spoke to one of the international nurses that joined us in 2023, Liji Jiji Chacko (pictured above) works in our Mother and Baby Unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital.

Liji believes that one of the key qualities that international nurses have is their willingness and openness to learn. She said: “Being an international nurse, we bring lots of experience from back home. When we come to the country, we are ready to work from the first day.”

She noted that as the UK is a very culturally diverse place, she can see the benefit to patients of having nurses of the same background and who understands their culture.
