Maudsley Talks continues its success by exploring Geopsychiatry

The third Maudsley Talks brought the series’ first international visitor to hear from Professor Dinesh Bhugra CBE, who presented his talk, Geo-political Determinants of Mental Health.

As a world-renowned authority on mental health and recipient of many honours, Professor Bhugra used his lecture to explore social determinants of mental health and the impacts of climate change.

The talk was a deep dive into the political, economic, commercial, cultural and geographical determinants of mental health. Professor Bhugra explored the impacts of climate change, natural disasters, political systems and policies, our geography and culture have on our mental health. He touched on a holistic view of how the environment we each live, work and play in can shape us – and the importance of having fun! He concluded by sharing his ideas for how to approach some of these impacts through policy and in psychiatric practice.

Over a hundred people attended the hybrid event, with one attendee travelling from Germany to hear the talk in person and meet Professor Bhugra. After the talk he said, “It was a privilege to hear from Dinesh and we should share his message across the world.”

Speaking after the event Professor Bhugra said, “I think the session went very well, there were some fascinating questions and lots of food for thought.”

Building on the Trust’s reputation as the UK’s leading provider of mental health services and close partnership with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London, Maudsley Talks brings together all clinicians, researchers, academics, and thought leaders to engage audiences across the NHS, academia, policy, and the wider public.

South London and Maudsley’s Chief Financial Officer, Gus Heafield, attended the event and reflected on his enjoyment of the talk afterwards saying, “I think the Talks as a whole are a fantastic idea and they’re a really great way to hear from some world leading experts, and bring together a mixture of people in the audience including professionals and members of the public. I’m really looking forward to the next one.”

The next Maudsley Talks will take place online on Wednesday 27 May - please register for an online admissions ticket in order to reserve your space and receive the joining link. And watch this space for the announcement of the next speaker.
