Nelson and Florence ward moves brought forward

Nelson and Florence wards will be moving into New Douglas Bennett House (NDBH) on 21 and 22 July – these moves have been brought forward as works are now nearing completion.

This is an exciting and important step for the Trust and we are pleased to be able to bring these moves forward, providing our service users with a more therapeutic environment to better support their recovery, and starting to bring this state-of-the-art building to life.

The wards will join the Eating Disorders Unit, who led the way into this new building with a smooth move-in process in May. We have already heard wonderful feedback from our service users about how much they like the new space.

Learnings from May’s move-in have allowed us to fine-tune our processes for a smooth transition for future wards, including Nelson and Florence wards. The wider programme of scheduled moves remains on track, with further wards from Lambeth Hospital moving to NDBH and Bethlem Royal Hospital in late August and September.

Emma Porter, Service Director for Lambeth said, “As we're transitioning to our new hospital, we're igniting a wave of positivity that transforms patient experiences and uplifts our staff's well-being"

New Douglas Bennett House is a £60m purpose-built facility that will transform our services, supporting high-quality clinical care, recovery, and a positive working environment. Wards are designed for service users’ needs with ensuite bathrooms, as well as access to a range of therapy and treatment rooms, outdoor balcony courtyards, quiet rooms, family rooms and multifaith spaces.

Plans for the moves will be managed with each ward individually, and service users will be informed and supported by their clinical teams.

Earlier this year the Trust agreed the sale of the Lambeth Hospital site to Legal & General (L&G), which plans to deliver a £350m redevelopment including affordable housing.

This sale is a key part of the largest and most ambitious modernisation project in our history, including opening New Douglas Bennett House and the Pears Maudsley Centre, which Trust teams moved into in May
