South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust announces Maudsley Charity sponsorship of Maudsley Talks series

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and Maudsley Charity are pleased to announce the charity’s sponsorship of Maudsley Talks, the Trust's flagship public engagement series showcasing world-leading mental health research, innovation and clinical practice.

Maudsley Talks builds on the Trust’s reputation as one of the UK's leading and most innovative providers of mental health services and its close academic partnership with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King's College London. The series brings together leading clinicians, academics and other leading experts to explore some of the most important issues shaping mental health today.

Support from Maudsley Charity will help the Trust continue to deliver the series and extend the reach of discussions that showcase pioneering research, clinical innovation and best practice to audiences across the NHS, academia, policy and the wider public.

Sarah Holloway, Chief Executive of Maudsley Charity, said:

"As a leading funder of transformative research and innovation across South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and the IoPPN, we're committed to ensuring that new knowledge is converted to practice that improves care for people living with mental illness. Maudsley Talks is an excellent platform for sharing that best practice, highlighting innovation and making world-leading expertise more accessible. We're delighted to support this important initiative."

Professor Derek Tracy, Chief Medical Officer of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust said:

“We are incredibly grateful for the Charity’s support with this exciting programme.

“At South London and Maudsley we are able to bring together our clinical and academic excellence, with a real current focus on translating that into transforming and improving care and treatment for our patients and the wider community.

“We want that learning to be shared not only across the Trust and our partners, but with as wide a national and international audience as possible, and Maudsley Talks is a great way to do that.

“The support of Maudsley Charity will allow us to build on the great work to date and make sure our work is having an even greater impact in the future.”

Held monthly, Maudsley Talks alternates between online and in-person hybrid events. They aim to make complex mental health topics accessible to audiences beyond academia and healthcare. Previous talks have explored subjects including perinatal mental health, the relationship between mental health and the environment, and the links between physical and mental health.

The most recent event, presented by Dr Tom Ward, explored AVATAR therapy, an innovative digital intervention for people experiencing distressing voices associated with psychosis, an exciting innovation in care being championed by the charity.

The next talk will be given by Professor Sir Simon Wessely a world-renowned academic psychiatrist who was one of the Trust’s longest serving psychiatrists and a Maudsley Charity trustee. He will be tackling the question:  Is there such a thing as a stress free job?”
