Work is progressing to get our two new state-of-the art facilities ready for use and we can now share an update on the timeline for team and services moves.
Moves into the Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People are expected to begin in Autumn 2025, with moves into New Douglas Bennett House to follow early 2026.
These new buildings are part of our £186 million Modernisation Programme, and will provide modern, purpose-built environments for care, recovery and research and better environment for our staff to work in.
Once open, these buildings will offer high-quality spaces that have been carefully designed with the needs of patients, families and staff in mind. From rooms improving patient dignity and access to calm therapeutic areas, to cutting-edge research space, these new facilities will help us deliver the best possible mental health care.
Unfortunately, both buildings have experienced water damage during construction. Our contractor, Integrated Health Projects (IHP) is carrying out essential repairs, and we are actively enforcing all our contractual rights to ensure all issues are fixed.
We know how frustrating the delays have been for patients, carers and staff and we are extremely grateful for everyone’s continued patience and understanding while this work takes place.
We’re doing everything we can to make sure the buildings are safe, fully operational, and ready to support high-quality care – and we won’t move any services into them until they are.
Ongoing progress across the Modernisation Programme
While repairs at the Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People and New Douglas Bennett House continue, the wider Modernisation Programme is moving forward.
We’re making good progress on refurbishing clinical and staff areas, with thoughtful décor updates helping to create more welcoming, spaces for patients, carers and staff alike. For example, the Chelsea Flower Show gold-winning British Red Cross garden ‘Here for Humanity’: now has a new home at the Maudsley – offering a calm, therapeutic space for all to enjoy.
In addition, our Lambeth Hospital site is being marketed for redevelopment. The sale of the site will help fund further improvements to our mental health services, while also creating new housing and opportunities for the local area. We aim to identify a buyer for the site later this year.
Stay informed.
We will continue to share updates as work progresses and service move dates are confirmed. You can find the latest on the Modernisation Programme page.
We look forward to opening these new spaces and providing outstanding care in modern environments.
