Supporting your Steps to Recovery

Our team will support you if you have mental health needs. We will work together with you and your families, friends and carers to help us to:

  • Understand your mental health needs
  • Find out what matters to you
  • Support you to reach your goals for the future

We treat everyone with respect and dignity.

We offer:

  • People who can help

Our team includes Mental Health Nurses, Peer Support Workers (people with experience of mental health challenges); Psychiatrists (mental health doctors), Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, Admin Officers, Social Workers, and a Pharmacist together with community support and employment specialists, amongst other professionals.

  • Support from organisations from your local community

We can connect you to advice, support and therapy from other professionals or local groups working in the community, who can help you get back on track. This includes groups with cultural knowledge and understanding.

  • Flexible support

We can support you at our Heather Close Community Mental Health Centre or meet you at other places in the community such as a café, or at home if you prefer. If you need more intensive support, our service includes a team who can meet you more often, in a place where you feel safe.

We want to help prevent you getting into a crisis and avoid going into hospital. So, if your mental health is getting worse, contact us or drop-in during opening hours if you need to see someone that day. (See contact details at the top of this page)

We have a programme of activities throughout the day for people who need this support we call this our Day Programme.

If you need a higher level of support, we offer a safe, home-like Recovery House where people can stay overnight for a short time, with support available 24 hours a day.

Being a Member

Everyone who uses our Centre is a Member. Membership is flexible and how much you are involved is up to you.

We know getting better takes time, and it helps when you feel connected to others, like you belong, and have something meaningful to do together.

As a member you can ask the team for support at any time. You can also take part in activities or volunteer at the Centre Day Programme.

“Care stream” membership
Members will be allocated someone from the Team to offer interventions that meet their needs.

For example, talking therapy, medication or support with everyday issues that they may be struggling with. These tend to relate to their diagnosis and may include information and coping strategies. They can attend the Day Programme throughout the week.

“Peer” membership
Once treatment with the Team has ended, Members can still continue to take part in the Day Programme to help them continue their recovery.

Day Programme

Taking part in our Day Programme is an important way we support people step by step to get better — whether that means feeling more connected to their community, trying different types of support, or simply discovering what works best for them. People can go at their own pace, and the programme is shaped around each person’s individual needs.

Here is what a typical day is like:

  • Morning: The day begins with a friendly welcome. New people can have an introduction if they want to. Then you can choose from various activities—work on your own, join a group, or get support from trained staff. This will all be guided by your Care Plan.
  • Lunch: Heather Close Centre offers food and refreshments in the café with opportunities to learn cooking or to help prepare meals.
  • Afternoon: Each day has a simple plan with different themed activities each day, such as:
    • Creative projects
    • Wellbeing sessions
    • Trips into the community
    • Learning helpful life skills
    • Support with social or faith activities at the weekend
