Croydon Mental Health in Learning Disabilities Service

How our service can help you

Our Mental Health in Learning Disability (Croydon) is a specialist, community-based service based at Bethlem Royal Hospital. We provide outpatient and community assessment, inpatient liaison, advice/consultation and treatment for people, aged over 18, who have learning disability together with mental health problems. We provide care for people who live in the London Borough of Croydon who has the following:

·  A significant reduced ability to understand new or complex information and to learn new skills (impaired intelligence)

·  With a reduced ability to cope independently (impaired social functioning)

·  Which started at childhood before the age of 18.

We do not work with:

·  Those with impaired ability because of enduring mental illness even though they may be functioning in the Learning Disability range.

·  An autistic spectrum condition or other social communication disorder when the person does not also have a significant Learning Disability but have Learning Difficulty.

·  Brain damage acquired during adulthood (over 18).

·  People with learning difficulty (e.g dyslexia) without a Learning Disability.

We are a small specialist team (Psychiatry) employed by SLaM and are part of the Behavioural and Developmental clinical academic group.  We work jointly as part of the Croydon Community Learning Disabilities Team (CDLT) which includes multidisciplinary health and social care professionals.
