Trust teams lead the way into the Pears Maudsley Centre

Today the first Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) teams have moved into the brand-new Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People.

The Centre for Interventional Paediatric Psychopharmacology and Rare Diseases (CIPPRD) team were the first through the door and are getting ready to welcome service users and their families into this new space. Staff from the Crisis Line, Response and Bed Management teams also had their building induction ahead of their move in next week.

A group of seven staff members stood together in a line, smiling at the camera. The walls in the background are green.

Speaking on the move-in day, Charlotte Laxton, CAMHS Senior Business Planning Manager, said, “It's a really exciting time. It's been a long time in the making and teams are getting really excited.”

We are pleased to finally be able to begin this new chapter. CAHMS teams will be moving in throughout May and will lead the way as we start to bring this incredible building to life. King’s College London colleagues will move into their space later in the year followed by the Clinical Research Facility.

This is more than just a new building. Designed with young people, the Pears Maudsley Centre is a vibrant and welcoming space which cleverly uses light, outdoor space, artwork and soft furnishings to help ease anxiety.

Once the move-in phase is completed, service users and their families, clinicians and academics will all work alongside each other at this state-of-the-art centre. And together we will transform our understanding and treatment of young people’s mental health.

Reflecting on what the move means for our services and service users, Charlotte Laxton went on to say, “It's a state-of-the-art building and I think it's impressive when you look at it. We're looking forward to young people and their families coming in, seeing the collaboration between young people, clinical and research and hopefully they experience that when they are accessing this new space."

The centre has been made possible thanks to a £10m donation from Maudsley Charity alongside the incredible generosity of major donors, foundations, and individual supporters.

The building will also be home to the King’s Maudsley Partnership for Children and Young People, a unique collaboration between the Trust’s specialist clinicians and leading academics at King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience- supported by Maudsley Charity – focused on improving the lives of children and young people living with mental health conditions and neurodiversity.
