I need urgent support now. Get help here.

In 2024, Lewisham was one of six places in England that were selected by NHS England to develop a new approach to caring for people with mental health needs in the community.

Following this announcement, and in the years leading up to it, the Trust engaged extensively with Experts by Experience, staff and partners across health, voluntary and community services to co-design a new approach to delivering mental health care that is more accessible, inclusive and responsive to local need.

The opening of Heather Close Community Mental Health Centre on 8 May 2026, following major refurbishment, is an important milestone in the transformation of community mental health services in Lewisham.

What our service users & carers say

Making sure people feel included was very important to us while we designed and planned this new Centre and our new approach to delivering care and support. We arevery gratefulto those service users and carers who have shared their ideas and experiences with us- and continue to do so. They have taken part in many meetings, discussions and workshops sharing their ideas and feedback which helped us develop and improve our plans. Hereisaselectionof some of thecommentswe’vereceived and below some real-life stories from those we support.

Katrina - My involvement

Katrina is a service user who has generously shared her time, wisdom and insight by experience with us to help us develop the approach to care we are using at our 24/7 Centre

  • Involved: “I have been involved with the pilot scheme since it was first discussed. A small group of staff plus myself met with NHS England and put our proposal forward. We were awarded £2.5 million to trial a new model of adult community mental health care!"

  • Heard: “It felt good to be heard and taken seriously. I felt that the space was safe enough for me to open up about my own experiences with mental health and the treatment I received.”

  • Equal: “I have been treated like a colleague and as an individual. Having a service user involved has allowed them to look at the pilot from every angle.”

  • Proud: “I feel proud to represent service users in Lewisham and the community. It has been incredible watching the pilot grow and I am very excited for the future of it.”

Our funders

We are very grateful to all our funding partners who are significantly investing in the Heather Close Community Mental Health Centre and the development of our new approach to delivering care care, including:
  • £5 million from NHS England

  • Over £3 million from Maudsley Charity for refurbishment works at Heather Close and a detailed evaluation by Kings College London.

  • Over £2m investment from the Trust and South East London Integrated Care Board (SEL ICB) in to the Lewisham VCSE Cooperative – a partnership with local voluntary and community groups to provide support across Lewisham and for the new centre. Read more about this here.
