Work with the Police
We recognise the need to improve relationships between the Trust, the police, and Black communities. By strengthening collaboration with the police and other partners, we aim to reduce the use of Section 136 (S136) and improve the experiences of our service users, especially those from Black backgrounds.
Key Actions
Police Training in Mental Health: We will provide targeted training for police officers to improve their understanding of mental health issues, with a particular focus on supporting Black service users.
Crisis Intervention Alternatives: We will develop and promote alternatives to police involvement in mental health crises, ensuring that service users receive appropriate care from mental health professionals instead of the police.
Ongoing Collaboration: We will establish regular dialogue between the Trust, the police, and community leaders to ensure that everyone works together to improve service user experiences.
Reducing S136 Use: We will work with partners to reduce the reliance on Section 136, promoting alternatives that keep service users safe and supported.
Outcomes
- Reduced reliance on police involvement, particularly the use of Section 136.
- Stronger, more productive relationships between the Trust, police, and community partners.
- Improved service user experiences, particularly for Black individuals, leading to a reduction in stigma and unnecessary interventions.
