Aims
- Provide an insight into autistic people’s experience of anxiety, meltdowns and shutdowns.
- Provide tools and strategies to support autistic people with meltdowns and shutdowns.
Target Audience
Target Audience:
- Mental health workers, Support workers, Hospital staff etc. who support autistic people with or without a learning disability.
- Participants must already have a good understanding of Autism – such as, completed Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism, or equivalent.
- Participants must have a general understanding of mental health problems or mental ill health
Learning Outcomes
- Identify a meltdown or shutdown.
- Identify causes and functions of a meltdown or shutdown.
- Apply acceptable language to behaviour.
- Use tools to measure mood baseline and variation.
- Employ preventative, positive and reactive strategies to meltdowns and shutdowns.
- Evaluate effectiveness of strategies and incorporate improvements in planning for the future.
Content
- Causes of anxiety in autistic people.
- Understanding masking & autistic burnout.
- What is stimming.
- What is a meltdown or shutdown.
- Identifying meltdowns and shutdowns
- What language to use and the impact of language.
- How can we use tools to establish a mood baseline and identify early signs of a potential crisis?
- What strategies can we use to prevent, manage, and deescalate meltdowns and shutdowns.
- How to support someone after a meltdown or shutdown.
