- Day 1: Friday, 16th January (Understanding ADHD in Adults)
- Day 2: Monday, 19th January (Diagnostic Tools and Co-morbidities)
- Day 3: Wednesday, 21st January (Management and Treatment Approaches)
Overall programme aim
- To provide non-specialist clinical mental health colleagues with the tools, knowledge, and practical skills to confidently identify, diagnose, and manage adults with ADHD, particularly those with co-morbid mental health conditions, in clinical practice.
Target audience
- For Senior clinical team members in general psychiatry and primary care within SLaM NHS Trust.
Day 1 - Understanding ADHD in Adults
Trainers : Dr Dene Robertson (Consultant Psychiatrist) with an Expert by Experience Co-Trainer.
Aim: To equip participants with foundational knowledge of adult ADHD, including its prevalence, neurobiological basis, and diagnostic criteria, allowing accurate recognition and differentiation in clinical settings.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognise and differentiate ADHD symptoms in adults within secondary mental health services, including variations in presentation across populations.
- Apply knowledge of epidemiology, neurobiology, and risk factors to understand the impact of ADHD on daily life, relationships, and employment.
- Familiarity with the diagnostic criteria in ICD-11 and DSM-5, research updates and national guidance where it relates to ADHD diagnosis and treatment.
Content summary:
- Epidemiology, the neurobiological basis, presentations in primary/secondary care, and detailed review of DSM-5 and ICD-11 diagnostic criteria.
Day 2: Diagnostic Tools and Co-Morbidities
Trainers: Dr Stefanos Maltezos (Consultant Psychiatrist) with an Expert by Experience Co-Trainer.
Aim
To develop participants’ skills in using evidence-based screening and diagnostic tools, and in managing the complexities of ADHD co-morbidities through practical, case-based learning.
Learning outcomes
- Utilise evidence-based screening tools to identify adults who may require a full ADHD diagnostic assessment, and engage patients effectively in the screening process.
- Distinguish ADHD from common co-morbid conditions through differential diagnosis and case-based analysis.
- Demonstrate practical competence in administering and interpreting the DIVA (Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults)
Content summary:
- Practical competence in using screening tools like ASRS, conducting the DIVA (Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults) via role-play, and managing complex differential diagnoses and co-existing disorders.
Day 3: Management and Treatment Approaches
Trainers: Dr Susannah Whitwell (Consultant Psychiatrist) with an Expert by Experience Co-Trainer.
Aim
To give participants the tools to create and implement holistic, guideline-informed treatment plans for adults with ADHD, integrating pharmacological, psychological, and lifestyle interventions for long-term management
Learning outcomes
- Develop individualised treatment plans for adults with ADHD, integrating pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions in line with NICE and national guidelines.
- Apply collaborative and holistic approaches to long-term management, including shared decision-making, monitoring , and addressing patient concerns.
- Incorporate psychological interventions, lifestyle modifications, workplace accommodations, and peer support strategies to enhance patient engagement and outcomes.
Content summary:
- Implementation of NICE guidelines, integrating pharmacological options (initiation and titration) with non-medication strategies including CBT, lifestyle changes, and workplace accommodations.
