Aim

  • To provide insight into neurodivergent experiences of mental health and illness 
  • To provide tools and strategies to support autistic people with their mental health and wellbeing

Target audience:

  • Mental health workers, Support workers, Hospital staff etc. who support autistic people with or without a learning disability
  • Participants must already have a good understanding of Autism – for example, Tier 2 Autism Training or Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Training

Learning outcomes:

  • Explain why autistic individuals are at increased risk of developing mental health difficulties. 
  • Differentiate between autistic traits and symptoms of co-occurring mental health conditions.
  • Apply neurodiversity-affirming and trauma-informed principles when supporting autistic individuals.
  • Demonstrate effective communication strategies using clear, concrete, and validating approaches.
  • Analyse case scenarios to identify needs, risks, and appropriate person-centred support strategies.
  • Develop a personalised wellbeing plan using practical tools.
  • Evaluate your practice and identify improvements to better support autistic individuals’ mental wellbeing.
